Support ACMG

The Simon Parboosingh Assistance Fund exists to provide ACMG members, staff, and volunteers with a source of emergency funding in the event of a personal crisis. Many ACMG members work independently and do not have access to the same benefits as employees.

History

Simon Parboosingh was a guide candidate participating on an assistant alpine guide exam when he was killed in an avalanche accident on Mt. Athabasca, in 1994. The Simon Parboosingh Assistance Fund was created in 1996 and has been supporting ACMG members through donations in his name ever since.

The Centennial Scholarship Fund assists promising apprentice guides in the mountain stream to complete their training and achieve full certification.

History

This fund was established in the 1990’s using proceeds from the Mountain Guides Ball and other donations. This scholarship honours the tradition and history of professional guiding in Canada by helping to ensure that finances pose less of a barrier to becoming a guide.

The Ken Jones Development Fund is used to help finance technical projects such as the upgrade of ACMG websites and member management and learning management systems, cirriculm reviews, instructor materials and other critical technical needs for the ACMG.

History

The fund was established many years ago in honour of Ken Jones, who was the first Canadian born mountain guide. With a career spanning from 1933 to 1974, Ken managed to include miner, log home builder, WW2 pilot, mountain warfare trainer and warden into his remarkable resume.

The Hans Gmoser Memorial Fund provides support for initiatives that promote the ACMG to the rest of the world.

History

Known as the father of heli-skiing, Hans was a legendary figure in the Canadian guiding arena. He was president of the ACMG for several key years during which time the Association began its transformation into a more professional organization. This fund was established by his family as a tribute to, and in memory of, this amazing man.

The Niccy Code Memorial Scholarship Fund supports promising female apprentice guides in the mountain stream in completing their training and full certification.

History

Niccy was a promising aspiring Mountain Guide whose enthusiasm for the mountains and love of guiding was greatly appreciated by her friends, colleagues, clients, and students. This fund was established in her memory by her family and friends..

The D’Arcy McRae Memorial Scholarship Fund is intended to assist promising apprentice guides who live and work in the Kootenay region of British Columbia.

History

D'Arcy was born and raised in the Kootenays and operated his own backcountry hiking adventure business. Through this, as well as his personal exploits, D’Arcy hoped to instill his love of wilderness into everyone he touched. This fund was established in his memory by his partner, Candace Plohman, and D'Arcy's family.

Through a process of small group training with established TAP instructors, the Brian Ebert Memorial Scholarship provides funds that enable ACMG apprentices in the rock, alpine or ski disciplines, who live and work on or near British Columbia’s west coast, to gain valuable skills and experience in preparation for their next exam.

History

Brian was a prominent figure in the British Columbia coast guiding community, on his journey to become a mountain guide. The fund was established in his memory by his family and community.

The Robson Gmoser Mentorship Fund was established to support mentorship initiatives and opportunities for ACMG members who are striving to complete their certification and develop a career in the guiding or instructing world.

History

Son of the legendary Hans Gmoser, Robson had an incomparable zest for life in everything he did. One of his passions was seeing and assisting development among those with less experience than he. After his tragic death in an avalanche, funds gathered at his memorial, along with a generous donation from his estate, formed the basis for the foundation of this important fund.
