ACMG Scope of Practice - Update
Tuesday, May 28, 2019
Marc Piché, Technical Director
The newly revised ACMG Scope of Practice is now
available on both the public and ACMG members websites.
Many changes were made with feedback from ACMG
members, employers and stakeholders with an emphasis on using consistent
language and further clarifying some of the more ambiguous sections. The
new document is also much easier to navigate in its PDF form by using
the search function or by clicking on subjects in the table of contents.
I have highlighted some of the changes below and encourage you to click
on the link and familiarize yourselves with any changes that affect your
membership discipline/s.

Moving of supervision section to the front of the document as it
pertains to most members and is the most highly referred to section
·
Significant clarification of remote supervision requirements
·
Clarification of Institutional supervision requirements
·
Revised table of required direct supervision for each discipline
·
Increased clarity around the roles and responsibilities of both
supervisors and supervised members
·
Added sections on practicums, helpers and tail guides

as the West Coast Trail
Climbing Gym Instructors Discipline

institutional supervision
Top Rope Climbing Instructors (TRCI) Discipline
·
Clarification of activities
·
Clarification that if working under traditional supervision
(i.e. form mountain guide, alpine guide, rock guide) they must still meet all
requirements of institutional supervision
·
Clarification that the TRCI scope of practice does not expand
when working under direct supervision
·
Set parameters around working in an ice climbing wall context
Via Ferrata Guide Discipline
·
Complete new section added
Cross-Certification

Variations to the ACMG Scope of Practice

Elimination of the Variance requirements and policy in favour of
a new system that would benefit all members.
·
Related new and emerging activities and techniques will be
reviewed by the technical committee and amendments to the scope of practice
will be made until future revisions are completed.
I would like to thank the
Technical Committee and Board of Directors for their time reviewing and
commenting on this project as well as the many employers and ACMG members who
took the time to send feedback. In particular I’d like to thank James
Blench for taking on the bulk of the early content changes and Helen Rolfe for
her excellent editing work and direction in professionalizing this
important document.
Please see the article in the
upcoming summer edition of The Arête for more details and context.
All the best,
Marc
